About Humberside Airport

Humberside Airport is a regional airport at Kirmington in North Lincolnshire, south of the Humber estuary. It serves Hull, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and the surrounding area of northern Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. According to UK Civil Aviation Authority figures, it handled 161,171 terminal passengers in 2025, around 161,000, an increase of about 7% on 2024.

The airport is run by Humberside International Airport Limited. Companies House records show that Bristow Helicopters Limited has significant control of the company, and it is the airport's majority shareholder.

Humberside has a main runway, 2,196 metres long, and a much shorter second runway. Besides scheduled and holiday flights, the airport has a long history of helicopter operations supporting the offshore energy industry in the North Sea, and CHC Helicopters is listed among its operators. The regional airline Eastern Airways had its headquarters at Humberside. It entered administration in October 2025, which ended its flights from the airport, including the route to Aberdeen.

How to get to Humberside Airport

By road

The airport lies just off the A18, about three miles from junction 5 of the M180, and it is signposted from the motorway. The wider road network, including the M18, M62, M1 and A1, can be reached from the M180, and the Humber Bridge connects the airport with Hull and East Yorkshire. The postcode for sat nav is DN39 6YH. Parking on site can be pre-booked online or paid for on arrival, and Blue Badge spaces are in short stay car park 1, close to the terminal.

By train

The nearest station is Barnetby, about three miles from the airport. There are three operators:

• TransPennine Express: trains between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport, calling at Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly.
• East Midlands Railway: trains to Grimsby and Cleethorpes, and via Lincoln and Newark to Nottingham and Leicester.
• Northern: local trains between Barton-upon-Humber and Cleethorpes.

There is no bus link from the station to the terminal. The airport recommends pre-booking Cable Taxis, its approved taxi partner, for the last part of the journey.

By bus

Hornsby Travel service 4 runs from Scunthorpe to Kirmington via Bottesford, Broughton, Brigg, Wrawby, Barnetby and Humberside Airport, about every two hours from Monday to Friday. North Lincolnshire's JustGo service also serves the area. It has no fixed timetable and must be booked in advance by phone or through its app.

Terminal and facilities

Humberside has a compact terminal. Passenger services include:

• Aspire Executive Lounge, open to passengers on any airline. It serves complimentary hot meals, snacks and drinks and has free Wi-Fi. It opens daily from 4.30am (times may vary). Places can be pre-booked, or you can pay on the day.
• World Duty Free, with a reserve and collect service.
• Special assistance, arranged through the airport information desk. Passengers are asked to request help when booking their travel.

Flying schools and private charter operators are also based at the airport.

Airlines and destinations

The main scheduled service is KLM's flight to Amsterdam Schiphol. It links the Humber region with KLM's hub, where passengers can connect to many destinations in Europe and around the world. TUI runs seasonal holiday flights to Palma de Mallorca, and tour operators arrange other charter trips at certain times of year. Helicopter flights for the offshore energy sector also use the airport.

History

The airfield opened during the Second World War as RAF Kirmington. No. 166 Squadron RAF flew Avro Lancaster bombers from there until the base closed after the war. In 1974 the site reopened as a civil airport, known at first as Kirmington Airport, after the runway was resurfaced and a terminal built. The first commercial flight, to Amsterdam, took place in 1975. The airport was later renamed Humberside Airport after the local government reorganisation that created the county of Humberside.

Manchester Airports Group owned the airport from 1999 until August 2012, when it sold it to the Eastern Group. Bristow Helicopters later became the majority owner and kept its stake after selling Eastern Airways in 2019. Eastern Airways stopped flying when it entered administration in October 2025, but KLM's Amsterdam service has continued.
